This was a GREAT book. I stayed up way too late reading and seriously considered taking a personal day to finish it :)

I loved Max and Murian. They had that soul mate kind of connection that I crave for the hero and heroine.

Murian is a widow - one who actually loved her husband - but I got the feeling that it was young love, and if her husband had lived they would have been happy together - but it wouldn't have been the soul deep love she had for Max. Murian's husband was killed under dubious circumstances and his people displaced. Murian is on a mission to find the truth and get her castle back.

Max is also on a mission - he is escorting his grandmother to a house party in Scotland where he hopes to find information he needs to capture a spy. He is also roped into helping his grandmother recover something priceless she lost in a card game.

On the way to the castle Murian and Max meet - when she holds up his carriage a'la Robin Hood. He doesn't know Murian is a woman at first and gets into a sword fight with her. Once he realizes "he" is a she - he is intrigued. And decides to track down the thieves.

These two have chemistry to spare - they are a perfect match for each other. Every scene that they share is wonderful - I almost didn't want the book to end. They are falling in love and feel that their love is hopeless because they both have obligations that will keep them apart.

They work together to fix up Murian's village, find the missing proof of her husbands death and reclaim his grandmothers lost item.

This book has it all - action, intrigue, steamy love scenes and true love. Throw in widows, soldiers, an evil Earl, comic relief from Max's grandmother, a super sweet epilogue and you have an outstanding book.

I can't recommend this book enough - it can totally be read as a standalone. I am now impatiently awaiting Nik's book!!

The Prince and I The Oxenburg Princes Karen Hawkins 9781476785974 Books Reviews

I am not usually a fan of HR books with Princes/Princesses from made-up countries, but Karen Hawkins makes it work for me. This series is a spin-off of the book 'How to Pursue a Princess' from the Duchess Diaries series. That book is the first introduction to the Princes of Oxenburg in the person of Wulf, the youngest brother. We are also introduced to Tata Natasha for the first time, and gain a little back-story about the Royal family. The Prince and I begins with our heroine, Lady Murien, in the guise of a "Robin Hood" style highwayman with her band of thieves, robbing Max, our Hero, and his grandmother Tata Natasha. This was a very enjoyable scene, but I must say that I was happy that it was really the only "Robin Hood moment" in the book. There was no long, drawn out cat-and-mouse game with the H trying to figure out who the h is. He finds the h pretty quickly, and when he realizes the hardships she is enduring he helps her. The heroine is hardworking and proud, but not too proud ( or childish ) to accept his help - we actually have a H/h who are grownups. No big misunderstandings or petulant behavior, just two people who are drawn together and falling in love, but can't see how they can be together. I really liked that Lady Murien loved her late husband, Lord Robert. Too many times an author will make the dead spouse a villain just to promote the new love interest, and I usually just feel like it's a lazy plot device. Murien shows us that you don't stop loving someone just because they died. The final 1/3 of the book was fast moving, with plot twists and multiple agendas, and a satisfying HEA. This review is based on the ARC from Netgally.
Max Romanovin is one of Oxenburg's royal princes as well as his countries leading general. Through dedication and handwork Max has risen to the top of the army chain and now commands the entire army of Oxenburg. While escorting his mother to a Lord's castle deep within the Highlands, a band of thieves halts their way and demand they "donate" to their cause prior to being let go. This merry band of thieves is led by a man dubbed the Scottish Robin Hood.

Lady Murian is a very young widow seeking revenge against the man that stole everything from her and her people. Despite the impossibility of her goal, to take back Rowendale, she is determined to see it through. What she never expected was the help and support of the warrior Prince she ambushed on the road.

This was an incredibly fun story that i thoroughly enjoyed reading. I will admit there was a part in the middle that I found a bit dull and boring, but after that little speed bump it did not disappoint! We see from the very beginning that Max and Murian have an immediate attraction but naturally neither of them act upon initially. Between Murian's peoples and Max's duties they fear coming together will cause more problems for them, but attraction can only be held off for so long before someone caves.

Murian was such a strong female character who showed such passion and love for her people even though they were only her people for a short while before the castle was stolen. Similarly Max is a strong male lead who leads by example and wishes to help those in need. Together, it is impossible to think of what these two could not accomplish considering how well they work together.

Being a solider Max knows the hardship and toll it takes on the wives of his fellow soldiers. After losing a close friend and having to inform the wife of his death, he vowed never to cause such sorrow to someone he loved. Though a noble idea, it is a foolish one as his second in command pointed out how it is better to have the time you have than to regret what has never been. Similarly he mentions how having a wife makes him fight harder every time in order to be with her again.

Both Murian and Max know that their entanglement can only last until Max must return home, though both of them also realize the more time they spend together the more difficult it will be to part. Unfortunately, neither one can fathom the idea of wasting what time they have left away from each other.

Though not entirely surprised at the ending, I was certainly glad it ended how it did. Clearly being a romance novel, we knew they would end up together but I was perplexed as to how Murian would handle it and I have to say the author created a wonderful ending that was certainly worth the wait.

Overall, this was a great book and a fantastic retelling of a twisted Robin Hood tale!
