I have purchased or plan to purchase almost all of the Thoene's books. I have most of them now and both my husband (who is not normally a reader unless it is Louis Lamour) and I have read all of them in order at least twice. This book is truly up to their standard of writing and we have yet to find a Thoene book we didn't thoroughly enjoy!
I have read every single one of the books by the Thoenes and always anxiously await a new one. This series of books pulls together the characters and events in Jesus' life to tell a compelling version of the events from the viewpoint of several of the characters. They provide insights into life in Biblical times and untold portions of Jesus' life while not overreaching the fictionalization. You will not be sorry that you pick up their books!
As I travel these stories from the Bible I grow closer to the characters . Every time I read about the well known people of the scriptures they are like family to me!
Crazy to be in the shepherd's shoes and be where they are. Awesome. It really gave me insight into how Jesus was born and the circumstances therein. And the ending. Crazy. Sad. I am really glad I read this book made it so much more real to me than just reading it outta the Bible. Now that I have 3 daughters and two of them under 3.
I'm halfway through this series, A.D. Chronicles, and I've loved all of them. The author does a superb job showing the reader how it was during the days Jesus was on earth, and brings the characters from the Bible, many of whom are nameless, like the blind begger, the shepherds, et al, to life with names and personalities. These are wonderful, insightful reads for Christians and anyone with an interest in the biblically recorded events leading to the birth and life of Messiah. I recommend them highly.
I enjoy the entire A.D. Chronicles, which make the New Testament come to life; but I especially enjoy Fourth Dawn, Fifth Seal, and Sixth Covenant, which cover the whole Nativity story. I wish a movie had been made based on these books, rather than the movie that WAS made about the Nativity... it would have been so much better, in my opinion! Have a box of tissue ready for this one - if you're anything like me, you'll need it!
For a story taken from scripture you do have a "for sure" story line, but I was interested in the dimensions they brought not only to the main characters, but the supporting. I wouldn't say I agreed with each liberty taken in developing the story but there wasn't anything that I thought was so far off that it was unbelievable. I will continue to read books by them.
