I don't have a spaniel, but with a mild tempered dog this was a good start, recommended by a family member. I was able to use a few tricks from this book, and I highly recommend to use this in conjunction with another spaniel book.Product details

Finished Dog is a must have and must read for any dog enthusiast! Finished Dog reads like a fireside chat that is tough to put down. If you have a Retriever you want to train from basic obedience to a great gun dog to a hunt-test/field-trial dog, this is the book you have been looking for. This book is not limited to just Retrievers. We used this book and its techniques to train our Lab as a great hunting companion and we were also competitive in the hunt-test game. We also have two Jack Russell terriers - both have been trained using the techniques in Finished Dog. Both are great "citizens" - our Jacks walk at heal WITHOUT a lead/leash in public places (parks, horse events, neighborhoods, etc.), come to heal when called, sit when meeting new people (and pups) - all the manners of a well trained canine companion. Charlie Jurney's ability to communicate and explain the training methods is unmatched in the dog training world. Most trainers (in my opinion) want to make training seem like magic or voodoo that only the select few can ever hope to accomplish. Charlie's common sense approach is understandable and doable for anyone. Finished Dog also helps us to better understand our pups and how their brains work. Again, a must have/read. Highly recommended!
I will admit I bought this book despite misgivings and, as it turns out, I was right to have misgivings.
Some of those misgivings stemmed from the title, which, at least for me, calls to mind the old concept of a finishing school, the sort of place young ladies used to be sent to make themselves presentable to high society. The young ladies came out of those schools polished all right, well-mannered and so forth, but not very interesting and absolutely unprepared to enter a profession or business or, even, in most cases, run a household without the help of servants. So it would be, I think, with Mr Jurney's dogs, because Jurney is or at least seems to be oriented entirely toward polished event dogs, not working gun dogs. In fact, in the worst passage in the book, he relates the tale of a client whose dog failed in a retrieving task and--this is the part Jurney seems to think was absolutely horrifying--did so in front of some corporate bigshot the client was sharing a blind with. Reminded me of some old episode of I Love Lucy or Bewitched, everyone falling all over themselves not to ruin the dinner party because the boss is there. If you really live in horror of being embarrassed in front of a CEO; likewise if you want a well-mannered dog to show off even for your buddies, then this could be the book for you. Then again, if appearances are really that important to you, perhaps a clergyman or self-help guru might be even more useful to you.
If, on the other hand, you want a hunting dog, one to find em, flush em, and fetch em in all the wild lonely places, there's not much here for you. The section on upland hunting is miniscule, the section on tracking and dealing with cripples non-existent. I have no doubt Mr Jurney's dogs are capable of performing some extraordinary feats, particularly in the area of handling, and within the entirely artificial atmosphere of a field trial a placid pond on a warm-ish spring day with one bird in the air at a time and one gun going off at a time, one dog working at a time, everybody wearing white. If you hunt like that, a dog trained as Mr Jurney suggests will do admirably. But if your hunts are more like mine--swollen icy rivers, skies full of ducks, multiple dogs, Coxey's Army blasting away from shore, well, let's just say, that dog is gonna have a little adjusting to do. And, if you hunt upland or expect your dog to track wounded birds or operate frequently and lengthily while out of your eyesight, there's almost nothing here for you.
Don't get me wrong. Mr Jurney is an accomplished and competent trainer, he just has his head screwed on backwards. It's not his fault field trials are useless but it is his fault that he's oriented this book entirely toward them. Not much here for the hunter.
Great book. But buy the book things are skipped in digital version.
Reads very easily. The author is telling your a story of training a dog and how it works rather than just a basic straight cut and dry how to manual!
This book dives into the simplistic psychology of a sag in an easy to understand format. If you can't see these characteristics in a dog, you need a cat.
